Belgian Book Binding Workshop

Belgian or "Secret Belgian" binding is a contemporary style book that combines the look of Japanese stab binding with the functionality of a Coptic sketchbook.  It looks complicated but is easy to learn.  No experience is necessary to join in this workshop, and you will make a completed blank book in one day.

This workshop runs from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. with a one hour lunch break at a natural stopping point.

Participants will be guided through covering boards with decorative paper, choosing a pattern for piercing and sewing the covers together, fold gatherings, and stitch them into place.

The resulting journal is a stylish and functional notebook that makes a statement blending contemporary and ancient styles.

Cost: $50

Coptic Binding 1 Workshop

Coptic binding dates to the Second Century A.D.E.  Practiced by early Christians in Egypt, the Nag Hammadi or Gnostic Gospels, were sewn in this chain-stitch style.  Get your Davinci Code on by re-creating this historical book style.

Practically speaking, a Coptic journal makes an excellent sketch book or notebook because its pages will lay completely throughout the book.  It is functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Participants in Coptic Binding 1 need no prior experience in book binding.  We will cover boards in decorative paper, pierce the boards for decorative sewing, assemble sheets into gatherings, and prepare those for sewing.  Participants will make all of the pieces necessary to assemble a Coptic-sewn journal.

Valentine's Day Workshop

Here's a date night/Valentine's Day gift idea!  Use teamwork to create a souvenir of your friendship or relationship by printing a poster with the refrain of "your song," a favorite saying, an inspiring quotation, even a directive such as "pick up after yourself"!  Anything goes at this fun, poster-making workshop; you can even come alone.

No experience is necessary.  Spend a fun evening in our shop, browsing our type and vintage illustration blocks to create two copies of a one-of-a-kind poster.  Collaborate with a friend or loved one on a single design, or register alone and take away two copies of your poster yourself.

Participants will learn to set type, help an instructor set a chase for insertion in a press, and print two copies of the poster they have designed.  Ink on the posters may be wet, but participants will be able to take away their posters at the end of the evening.

Cost: $35 per registration (two people may share a registration)
